Largest tire for 17in rim on 04-08?

Could anyone tell me what's the biggest tire that can be ran on a 17 in rim without a leveling kit? The truck is a 05 4wd that belongs to a friend of mine. He doesn't want to level it. Thanks in advance.

He could also probably fit a 295/70-17 (34x12.00) or a 305/65-17 (33x12.50) using the OEM wheels, but those sizes are less common than 285/70-17 (33x11.50).

The first number in the metric sizing system is the width of the tire in millimeters and the second is the aspect ratio. It all works together to give you the size. So basically,
285/70-17 = 33x11.50-17
295/70-17 = 34x12.00-17
305/65-17 = 33x12.50-17
305/70-17 = 34x12.50-17

Look at my album New tires. I have 285/70/17 with no level or anything. They fit great and don't rub anywhere even when going over curbs small logs etc.

3rdFord,

Just one more piece of info related to above - the aspect ratio (65, 70, etc) represents the sidewall height in a percentage of the tread width...

305/65-17 has a sidewall 65% of the tread width (198.25mm sidewall = 7.8")
305/70-17 has a sidewall 70% of the tread width (213.50mm sidewall = 8.4")
