Unhappy BFG AT Will not fit on stock rims

Greetings all,

I have a 2004 F150 SCab 4x4 Lariat with a 2.5 inch leveling kit. Currently running stock 275/65/18 with BFG Rugged Trails. I want to upgrade to the
BFG AT 305/65/18. I went to Discount Tire and the salesman told me no BFG AT will fit my stock wheels. I need at least 8.5 inch rim and I currently have 7.5. I have read here that most of you can fit 305 BFG in stock wheels. Is he correct, or do I need to go somewhere else? I'm thinking he is honest since they are pretty pricy and he wouldn't just sell them to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I went from 255x70x17 stock general americraps to 285x70x17 BFG All Terrain TA's, no problemo, 305's might be a problem.........

He is correct because he is a tire puppet and his strings are being pulled to tell you what BFG recommends what size wheel width to mount them on. Numerous people have 285x65 and 305x65 tires on stock wheels with no problems. I have 315x70 tires on an 8" wheel and have over 30k miles with no problems. I'd go somewhere else.

No complaints PawPaw. I have some pics on page 3 of that thread where I tried them out in some deeper snow. Thye do very well in the snow for a wider tire. They're noisier than the Firestone Destination AT's I had, but only a bit, and the Firestones you basically couldn't hear at all. The Firestones flat spotted when being parked for some time in the cold. These BFG's don't seem to flat spot in the least. These are also E rated, so they hit the bumps a little harder, but not enough to rattle the teeth outta my head. I'm happy with them, and they look great!

technically, BFG recommends at least an 8.5'' wheel to mount them on. however, there is nothing wrong w/ mounting them on the stock 7.5'' wheel. any reputable shop should have no issue balancing them.

Thanks guys. I thought maybe there was a wheel width difference in 2004
F150 vs other years. I will go somewhere else. I do like the aggresive look of the BFG All Terrrains. :o

They ride a little rougher then the stocker's, but not as rough as my Toyo AT's. Glad you like 'em and they really look good on your truck.

Buy the tires from Discount and get them mounted somewhere else.

(in austrailian accent of course)... be very quiet so as not to scare them off. it's said by some not to exist but if you look very closely at this picture you can see the very seldom seen "BFG on stocker" combo.

Its just a safety thing. I work there. There are so many precautions and things we cannot do. It may seem stupid, but there is a reason behind all of it. Our number 1 concern is customer safety.

When I was initially looking at 295/70/17 Nitto TG's, I was told by a tireshop in the states that they wouldn't mount them (even tho the 295 is rated for a 7.5" wheel) because the tire was more than 3% larger than the stock tire it came with.

Tire maker white coats place these limits for a reason. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Liability keeps us from selling fitments that are not recommended as well. It's out there and it's very real....
