Question New Tires

Hello new to the forum...

My 2006 F150 Supercab 4X4 needs new tires and I was wondering what is the biggest tire I can put on it...

I was told that I have to watch what size I put on it due to throwing off the speedometer and messing up my transmission...

I was looking at 245 70 17 General Grabber A/T
My truck came with 235 75 17..

Thanks,
John

My 05 came with 255 70 17's on it, so I know you can go at least that big.

I have never heard of messing up the transmission from bigger tires.... unless maybe you put some real monsters on it. I had 33x12.50R17 tires on mine for about 25K miles now and I haven't had any problems. My gps tells me that my speedometer is off by about 4 mph at 70. That wasn't enough for me to worry about getting the speedometer recalibrated but you can have the Ford dealer do that for you if you want.

For a 17" wheel, 285/70/17 is the biggest you could go without rubbing anything.

Not trying to disagree.... but 285's are only about 11.5 inches wide. My 12.5 inch wide tires do not rub. I have a levelling kit which I guess could make the difference.

The leveling lets you put a taller tire on. I had 285/70-17 and didn't have any rubbing or trimming when my truck was stock height (4x4). I ran that setup for 30k and didn't notice any ill affects. The bigger you go the more off the speedo is and the more stress you put on your transmission. I have 35's now and will regear from 3.55 to 4.56 soon.

So If I got 245.70.17 I will be fine....
What about if I wanted to do 285.70.17??
Do I need to level the truck?

What do you think about the General Grabber A/T 2....
What about Nitto Terra Grapplers

I want a taller tire to fill up my fender well some...

I also pull a 16 ft boat with my truck...

Thanks,
John

A 285x70x17 will fit on a stock 4x4, leveled out you can go up to a 35x12.5. The 285's are close to 33 inches tall and will fill up the wheelwells nicely. Nitto, Toyo, BFG and Pro Comp make some great all-terrain tires in the 285x70 size.

Yeah, that 245 is too narrow. I'd at least step up to a 265 at minimum. The 285 would look the best though. Be sure you get an LT tire and not the P tires since you do do some pulling. Those P tires are crap on our trucks.

Ok. Can anyone verify a 305 tire would fit un-leveled on a 4x4? I'm pretty certain that 285 is the widest you can go without it rubbing anything and without trimming anything.

Yeah, was gonna say, don't go with the P rated Grabber's, just found out last week that General is discontinuing the P rated anyway's, go with the 10 ply Grabber's in a 265 or 285.

The first one you selected is a P rated tire. You need to go with the LT's.

Ok I'm confusing myself with this where do I look for the P rating thing...

I want a tire for on road off road driving but I will be pulling my boat too but I will be going into the mountains for wood for my wood furnace and for my hunting trips..

I am not looking to spend a fortune either due to the fact I have 3 kids...LOL..
I have 235 75 17 Bridgestone Dual Revo A/T's now but I didn't like the tire It wore out too soon...

The "P" is in front of the tire size on the first link.
P=Passenger rated tire
LT=Light Truck rated tire the LT have load ranges also.
