rear brakes

I have a 98 f150 4x4 ,i didnt have much brake petal so i ajusted the brakes in the rear which are drums ,and it gave me more petal, and they work great for about a day or so then it goes back to the same thing, petal is farther down again,i have plenty of brake pad ,not sure if the self adjusters are shot or the wheel cylinders are sticking or whats going on, anybody have any thoughts on this thanks

It sounds like the self adjusters on the rear brakes are backwards. ie when you back up and stop quick the rear shoes are supposed to adjust tighter if necessary. It sounds like they are loosening, or more specifically installed backwards. Sometimes the adjuster mechanism on one side has left hand threads and other side right hand threads. Was any recent rear brake work done?
