Thanks man. I know its not good for the transmission but if I continue to baby it then it should be fine until I get gears. (hopefully this summer)

no not that exact setup. But 36's stock 3:55's did its job on mine.
My ranger and bronco II both needed new transmissions when ran and offroaded without gearing.
It really depends on how the truck was drove up to this point. IF it was dogged then this might be the straw that breaks the camels back. If it was taken care of and NEVER abused then it would stay kickin longer.
and ****** really doesnt know what rear gears he has since the replaced rear axle. most likely its the same as the stock but who knows. Unless he found out already. been awhile since i talked to him.

i would really really baby it and not drive it much, 38's are huge, and im assuming your going 14.5" wide atleast thats alot of weight. listen to what trimble says, he dogs the hell outta his truck so he is someone who i would really listen to. mileage on your truck will also matter, if you have high miles i would really consider waiting, your risk of actually screwing something up really increases if a pre-existing problem is already there.

it was acting up alittle before i started the work on it. I flushed the fluid and changed the filter. It was actually running alot better on the way there but i know its a matter of time. Thats why im getting a built one before i put the diesel in.

I'm running almost 39's on my '01 f150 without gears right now. As long as you baby that tranny, there should really never be a problem just because of the tires(My truck has 95k on it so eventually i'm going to have to replace it anyways).... Remember, slow and easy wins the race(unless you're on the track :P)

...damn, makes me wanna go bigger. Looks about identical to mine, just a bit taller . How about some specs on the lift, wheels, tires?
I agree though, these transmissions seem to be hit or miss depending on how they've been treated from the start. As long as it hasn't been put through hell before the 38s, you should be able to baby it without too much trouble until you get the funds for some 4.88s.

you're gonna cry if you blow the trans, and then have to regear on top of that. why spend up to $3500 on both, if you only have to spend $1200-$1500 for gears?
my buddy has an 03 with 38x15.50's on stock gears, and he has blown the transmission twice. he finally learned it was time to regear.
