4.6L with 38s and gas mileage

I am putting the 6 inch lift on top of my 3 inch body tomorrow and I am planning on running some 38 x 14.50's but im afraid gas mileage is gonna suck. All I have done to it is the gotts intake mod and exhaust. Anybody out there got the 4.6 on 38s that can tell me how bad my gas mileage will be? thanks!

it will take a hit. But after you regear you can get alot of it back. Aswell as power.

Ill be running 44's on a 4.2 Motor size means nothing its all about the gearing.

theres no way id run anything larger than a 36 without regearing the differentials. and not because of bad gas mileage... its because of transmission damage.

Well I would say you are gone to be looking at 1200-1500 dollars probably. You might could get it done cheeper, but it depends on how many shops around you that does it

Do you all think my gas will be that much affected since im going from a 35 x 12.50 to a 38 x 14.50? I just wanna know if there is a big difference in getting the 38 x 14.50's and not like some 36 x 14.50's or something like that. Thanks Guys!!

theres gonna be less MPG because of rolling resistance, tire weight, and wind resistance. the truck will have a harder time accelerating. Regearing helps all his stuff.

I wouldnt be too worried with MPG with stock gears id be more worried about blowing the transmission. IMO dont even consider running anything bigger than a 36 on stock gearing.

X2. While you're saving up for regearing, you should be saving up for a new transmission

dude, in my honest opinion...i would let those tires sit in your garage until you have the finances to regear...youre going to spend ALOTTTTT more money from fixing worn and broken parts(i.e. transmission, ball joints, transfer case, not to mention you burn more gas, meaning you burn more oil..so theres additional cost there too)...just a bad idea all around man..sorry, not trying to shoot you down, im trying to save you money...

I have a 2wd 1999 4.6L with 35's and 4:56's and i get about 17-18 on a good day..like i said, youd be lucky to get 10-12..if that

Well the truck got lifted and I put the 38's under it. It does burn more gas but its not as bad as I thought. I have to run the 38's cuz i have no other tires. I didnt have to trim anything to fit them. I will try to get some pictures up of it tomorrow!!!

So have you decided where you will be getting your new transmission from?

if you don't regear, you will just blow the drivetrain. don't do it dude! your gas mileage without regear will be around 6-8 mpg anyway. I have seen so many guys go to 38/40s or whatever your fancy and lose diffs and trannies in 5k miles. I'm telling you man.. don't kill your truck.. wait for the gears. Besides, if you get the gears done while you're having the lift done it will cost less as the shop won't have to pull the whole thing apart again. where are you located?
