will 17's fit an 08 that came with 20's?

I went to my local 4x4 shop and the guy said I probably couldn't run 17" rims because mine came with the OEM 20s... He said that the brake calipers would probably have to be replaced with smaller ones!?!?!?! Is this true? I was all set to buy some 17x9s with some 315/70/r17s and now Im unsure if they'll fit...

p.s. i have and '08 fx4 supercrew

The early 2004s had smaller calipers and those 17s will not work, but as far as I know, the calipers for 2008 are the same used on 2005s and up. So 17s should work just fine, ecept for those very early sets.

Hit up Wandell he should know and I would say you can. My 08 came with 17's and I am going to 22's without changing the brakes so it make sense that you can go down to 17 and the brakes would work. Call Ford as well if you second guess everything.

A lot of the newer truck's still run 17" wheels from the factory. The best thing is to test fit one first to see if it clear's the caliper's if it's an aftermarket wheel.

ya, thats a good idea... I guess I can go over to 4wheelparts and have them test fit it... I would think I'd be able to fit it. Just from eyeying the distance between the inside of my wheel and the brake caliper I think I have about 2" distance, so I should be able to fit it, but I guess I will try 4wheelparts tomorrow and see if they'll test fit it for me.

I havn't seen a post on 17's not fitting in a long time. Like mentioned, Ford changed the caliper design in 2005 and there were some problems with some aftermarket 17's fitting but apparantly the aftermarket has sorted the clearance problem out.

also make sure to factor in the height of stick on wheel weights, i have seen a guy mount up and set and drive 10 feet and tear all the weights off

Okay... That's good news... Plus, the guy who told me that was running 325/60/r18s, on a - I think - an '04 with a body lift and level kit... it looks really nice, but he was trying to tell me that he was pretty sure that the 17s wouldn't fit... I was all the while thinking 18s + tires won't fit my budget.
