14.50" width tires, whats the min rim width?

Is there a rule of thumb for determining the minimum rim width for a given width tire? I'm currently running on 20" x 12.50" tires and 20" x 9.50" rims but I have a set of 20" x 14.50" tires sitting in my garage and was wondering if I'd have to get wider rims as well.

If you check the tire manufacturers website they will have the recommended rim width. I would go with a 10 to 12 inch wheel.

Pitbull is saying 12" and I'm having a hard time finding a 20" x 12" black wheel. Can't go chrome with my set up so it really narrows down the possiblities. I may have to ditch these Pitbull Rockers and go another route.

Our website has these specs, too.

Update

Bit the bullet and bought wider wheels so I could run the Rockers. Minor triming was required at the rear bottom edge of the front fender wells to retain full clearance.

These stick out a bit more than the wheels before. I think I'll have to get some Bushwacker flares now.

Thanks fellas. It's pretty vanilla. Procomp 6" stage I plus an add a leaf spring to get rid of that typical pre runner *** sag that Procomp has. 20" X 10" w/ 4.53 backspace and -12 offset KMC XD Series Monster wheels and 35" X 14.50" Pitbull Rocker tires.

Not sure if these pictures help or not. Without a before and after shot it might be hard to tell exactly how much was trimmed.

Thanks speedfreak, i got to mine yesterday morning. Basically the same thing. Had to trim front and rear edges of the front wells.

But this was for a 12.5" tire on a 9" rim with 4.5" of BS
