18s vs. 20s

Alright, I tried searching and could not find where this question has been answered. I am going to be buying wheels and tires in December. I have thought I would go with 20s, and have found a used set I like I will likely buy, but I am wondering if there is any advantage (or disadvantage) to going with an 18 inch wheel over a 20 inch wheel. Comfort, mileage (ha!), just aesthetics?

For background, I have a 2008 FX4 with a leveling kit. I have the OEM 20s (for sale in December!). If I go as planned, the 20s I found will be wrapped in 33x12.5 Toyo MTs.

Should I consider 18s though? Can you go with 35s on 18s and not have to really mess with the gearing on a FX4? Should I just stick with my plans?

Thanks for the help.

It's strictly personal preference. IMO, 33's look best on 18's. As for your OEM wheels, you can fit up to a 35x12.50 using them. However, the OEM 20's have a lot of backspacing and some 35x12.50's with aggressive sidewalls will touch the upper control arm/ball joint. I would suggest going with an aftermarket 18x9 inch wheel with 5 to 6 inches of backspacing and a set of 33x12.50-18's or 325/60-18's (33x13.00).

I had the OEM 20's when I bought my FX4, but sold them and went with 18's. Like Wandell said, 18's look better with 33's IMO. Also, the price difference between the 2 made up my mind indeed.

Thanks Wandell. If it just comes down to preference with no real benefits one way or another, I'll just stick with my plan of getting 20s. Hopefully no one will buy the used set I have my eye on before December.

Thanks hivoltage. Your truck looks great. Then again I am partial since we have the same color. I was thinking of going with black wheels as well, but just can't find any I really love, except for the pro comp 7005s. I will likely go chrome. Nothing like waffling on a Wednesday.

IMO these trucks dont look right with smaller than 20" wheels. 20" fits them perfect.

Ya IMO with 35's go 18 or smaller but with 33's the wheels just not big enough to fill the wheel well and 18's just dont look right. But 33's and 20's have a alot cleaner look and i think it makes the tire seem bigger.

I prefer the look of 33s on 18s and 35s on 20s. My 33s fill up the wheel wells just fine, as far as I am concerned.
