285-64-20 vs backspacing.
I'm looking at this wheel for my 05 4x4 Lariat.
- Ultra Goliath 223/224 Series-Chrome 20x9, 6x135, 5" Backspacing
and I'd like to put on BFG 285-65-20's. I know I'll have to put on a 2" leveling kit which I'm fine with but does anyone know if the tire will rub when turning tight turns?
I'm not sure I understand what backspacing means, I read somewhere that I needed a 6 in backspacing to avoid rubbing.
Or should I go with a 2.5 leveling kit?
Thanks again guys, your help has helped me understand all this much more clearly.

Backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel (where it bolts to the hub), to it's rear edge. Those wheels will stick out 2 inches farther than your OEM wheels. A 285/65-20 is basically a 35x11.50 tire. It will be a tight fit using that wheel and a leveling kit. A 33 inch tire like a 305/55-20 or 285/555-20 would fit easily however.

The specs you listed are for the low offset wheels. They list the regular Goliath 223/224 wheels in 20x9 with a 6x135 bolt pattern as having 6 1/8" BS and an offset of +30.
You might be able to fit the 285/65/20s on those.
Wandell, can you confirm or deny that?

NCSU,
Thanks for the response btw. Here's the link to the ones I'm looking at:

They are a different model than what you pull up.
On a side note, what does offset mean?
Thanks guys for helping a rookie, it really helps make the right choice.

Here's where I got my info... http://www.ultrawheel.com/pdf/rims/223c.pdf
The part number for the wheel I suggested is 224-2963C.
I ordered mine from Discount Tire and they price matched the lowest internet price I could find. Made things pretty easy.

You have to find a compromise. Too much backspacing and the tire is tucked in and can rub the control arms or swaybar. Too little backspacing and the tire will stick out and rub on the fenders and bumper. A 9 inch wide wheel with 6 inches of BS may allow you to run the 285/65-20's but I'm not certain. It will be tight for sure.

FYI, the specs on my wheel are 20x9 with 6 3/8" of BS and a +35 offset. My 285/65/20s fit with no rubbing, but just barely. I definitely couldn't fit a wider tire on those rims, maybe one that was just a little taller (but I don't think any one makes a tire that's taller but not wider).
