Tirerack has a pretty good FAQ section. Here is a like to the 'letters and numbers' section:

The UTQG scale is what you are referring to, and for the most part it succeeds at doing nothing more than confusing the consumer....

The numbers are manufacturer specific, not an industry standard. BFG may have a scale for, say, an AT T/A KM2. Well, that number is designed ONLY to rate that tire to other BFG's that are in the MT category.

Compare it to a Goodyear? Means nothing.

Compare it to another BFG that's an AT not an MT? Means nothing.

Combine that with the fact that BFG's idea of what a 400 treadwear should be may be completely different with what Goodyear's is.....

I usually try to combine my experience with tires from daily exposure with real world survey results and test results if available. If you choose to use them at all, do it collectively.

yea thats what i was wondering about.

like if a tire has...400 treadwear and another tire has 800, but the temp is (what ever the hell temp uses, letters i think) and the temp is better on the 400 than the 800 one....im confused. SEE!
