You need to get your ABS code read.

Or just replace everything in the brake system. You are just playing a guessing game with the "oh no something is wrong with my brakes" light.

How do I get my ABS code read?

Can vAutoZone do this for me?

When truck is first started there is no ABS light, only once truck is moving.

Funny change though, When I has the old sensor, light only came on when moving forward. Now with the new sensor, light comes on in reverse or drive??????

So something did change, it just got worse with the brand new sensor???

No Auto Zone can't read ABS codes to my knowledge. You have to bo to some place that has better readers. If you take it to a decent brake shop they should have the equiptment to read it.

Out here on the left coast I think Aamco does it or maybe try one of the national franchises, they might do it for free to cheap.

Around here (San Antonio, TX) AAMCO is a transmission place, but I'll go visit them.

Any other ideas???

Same here but thet advertise to read codes and fix what ever is wrong, so give it a try.
The most it could cost is a phone call!

Ok so yesterday I replaced the front pads and rotors, but oops!?!? it was the back brakes making all the noise (not to say the front didn't need a refresh)

So tonight I will work on the back brakes tonight. I hope this has something to do with the ABS light but either way I do NEED brakes, lol

When you had the front rotors off did you clean the ABS sensors? On the back of the rotors is a tone ring and on the knuckle is a magnetic sensor which can collect crap and causes the light to come on. Back brakes will not cause an ABS light. Rear sensor is mounted on differential not near brakes. Also did you buy correct front rotors with tone ring or did you buy a cheap off brand without?

When I had the rotor off I did not see anything like that???

I think the ABS sensor is in the hub/bearing right? I remeber them having a wire and plug sticking out of them.

Well I had the front hub/bearings replaced back in March.

And yeah I bought the cheapest rotor they had ($33/side) but it looks just like the one I took off (except not as rusty) but i did not see any sensors???

Thanks for responding

On the 2WD the tone ring is a wavy steel ring on the back of the rotor. It is not a sensor. Yours may be a bit different as you have 4WD. You should be able to check the sensors. The sensor is magnetic and can pick up debris. If the problem began after the bearings were replaced you may have dislodged the sensor or it has collected some debris from the job. If it has any metal bits stuck to it it will not give the correct info to the ABS computer. It would be useful to get the ABS codes pulled.

Whereabouts in San Antonio do you live? I'm from here as well. Have you stopped into any of the Brake Checks? I'm not sold on everything they do, but they usually offer free inspection. I'm going to Planet Pickup tomorrow and they're looking at my brakes for me as well. I'm not sure they advertise brake work but they were willing to look at them for me.

Question Noob question.

Sorry to hijack this thread. I have a 99 expedition.5.4,4wd with no owners manual. I've downloaded one and I am a bit confused. According to the (pdf file)owners manual there are two different abs icons. If you have rear abs, only the icon abs will show. If the illuminated icon is 4abs , I assume you have front and rear abs. Is this true? I only ask cause my abs(not 4abs) light has started coming on,and staying on. This is my first Ford and my first vehicle with abs. I am not sure where to look for sensors. All four wheels or just the back two. Any diagram /input would be appreciated.

I also had ABS light come on today. I will be checking this out tonight. I have a "better" code reader than autozone uses. So I will see if I have access to ABS info before I start disassembling.

this is a comizeration posting

in February, i had all my pads & rotors up to date and have not been doing as much commuting since. i know for a Fact my brakes are ok.

none the less, the abs lite on my 01 4x4 screw came on for the first time in a quarter million miles. the manual says pretty much squat about it, simply that while on, the abs function is not enabled. swell!

i am not doing any crazing driving so the abs isnt really needed, but i do plan to nail this when i get paid first of the month. that plus a tranny crossmember replacement and rear diff service (the dealer points out is needed).

i'll post my results in 2 wks..

meantime, good luck !
