General AmeriTrac TR's....am I crazy??

My truck came stock with them. I always figured when the time came for tires I'd "upgrade" to better tires. Here's the thing....I've never had a problem with them on ice or in snow in the last 3 New England winters. I don't do any serious off-roading, and the few times I've had it on the beach it did fine (with the tires aired way down of course). I've never had hydroplaning issues except for a couple of times when I hit pretty deep standing water at highway speeds. Furthermore, they have almost 68K miles on them and the worst 2 tires still have about 7/32's tread depth left in the middle, with the outside edges worn down a bit more (They were on the front without being rotated for about 50K miles)...obviously most of my driving is on the highway, hence the long tread life, which brings about another point..they are quiet as hell, even at 70+ mph.

So, I now find myself wondering why bother to spend more on different tires, which I don't know for sure how long they will last, when the AmeriTracs have proven they are perfectly fine for what I do with the truck, and I know they will last me another 68K, probably more if I take care of them better with more regular rotations. I guess some of the other tires have "cooler" looking sidewalls or tread blocks.

IMO they are JUNK!! My Great Uncle has bought a couple of new F-150s the last few years-an 04 non heritage, a 07 and a 08 and ALL of those trucks had those crappy tires on them. He babies his trucks and does all his maintince himself. After a bout 30k WITH regular rotations/balancing those tires were bald all three sets I would go w/ a better quality tire like BFG{not the long trails} Michelin etc. Just my .02

used to have an 06 screw 6.5 ft bed with the generals and they were very good in everything for 57,000 miles we had the truck. They lasted till 60,000 from what i heard and we employees did burnouts on a reg basis, lol!

They might be ok on the road but suck on backroads. I got flats on two tires one of which could not be repaired just by running over rocks on logging roads. If you do any type of country driving avoid these.

If you are happy with them, you will be thrilled with a quality tire.

if you are happy with them, why change? you're just risking dissapointment down the road when the tire you go with is not up to snuff.

that said, you probably will be able to get a tire that is as good if not better than the generals you have now for less money. tire manufacturers know that many people simply buy what is on the vehicle originally when i comes time to replace tires. also, the BS the vehicle manufacturer spouts about "tires that are specifically engineered for the vehicle" gets to some peoples' heads. so the tire manufacturers can charge pretty much whatever they want since many times, the tires are already sold before the owner even thinks about purchasing new ones.

if you go to your local tire shop and talk with someone knowledgable there (believe it or not we aren't all crooks as people here would have you think) they can get you into a much better tire for a lot less money.

General Ameritrac TR tires

I bought my new 2004 Chevy Colorado Z71 with them on . At 55,000 miles I replaced them which I believe I could of got 65,000 on them but I travel the highways a lot and just wanted to be safe. I replaced them with the same tires and have loved them. I work heavy highway construction and am always off road never had any problem in gravel dirt mud snow Great tire. Now I went to replace at 113,000 and found out that discontinued them Very disappointed. If any one knows where I can get a new set please reply. Thanks
