Lightbulb need help

Ok here is what I am trying to figure out. I have a 05 screw 2wd I am wanting to go with the moto metal 951 series for rims wrapped in 285/70/17 nitto terra frapplers. I found a great deal on 18 inch rims. What I have been told is that I can only go 33's for tires unless I want to regear my truck. My question is If I got the 18's for rims and put 285/70/18 on there would I have to regear. I wouldnt have to if I keep the 17's but adding more wheel I am wanting to know if I would have to regear. I am putting a 1" rear block with a 3" front level kit so I know I will have enough space just not wantting to regear. Any comments will help. Thanks in advance

Is there some reason you don't want to change the tire aspect ratio? For example: A 285/65/18 would be a little over a tenth of an inch smaller than the 285/70/17 setup. Play games with the following formula:
Metric width (275, 285, 305, etc.) divided by 25.4 = equals the tire tread width in inches. Tread width multiplied by the aspect ratio (50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, etc.) as a percentage of the tread width = equals the sidewall height; e.g., 285/25.4 = 11.22 x .65 = 7.28". Since you have a sidewall above and below the rim, multiply that number by two (14.56) and add the rim diameter (18) and you have 32.56". To compare: 285/25.4 = 11.22 x .70 = 7.85 x 2 = 15.7 + 17 = 32.7" = your original size.
Of course, availability of the tire you want in the size/aspect ratio you want will play in to this. Have fun with the math.

I would not see where you would need to change the gearing on the truck. I jumped 3.5" in tire height and works just fine. It will change the speedometer and odometer, but that will be about the only difference you will see. So Comort is right, you could play around with the size and get the same over all height you have now to keep it the same. What size came on your truck from the factory? I am showing a 05 Ford F150 XLT Super crew 2wd came with a 255/65R17 stock.

it came with the 255/65/17 stock. My main thing is that although I love the lifted look just not willing to shell out the cash for the big lift. I just want a lil lift thats why I want to go with the 1" rear and 3" front level. I would like to go 35s but so far everyone says I will lose power. So I am ok with 33s. Also i dont want the tire sticking out of the truck at all. I am set on the rims and the Nitto terra grapplkers love the way they look. just wondering what is an estimate of the gear if I were to replace it and how hard is it to put in. I dont think it would be to hard I also tow about 5000-7000 trailer about 2 times a week. So my concern is power. Also I did see that some people were running the 35s with stock gear does this have any effects on other parts? Thanks for all the help

You may have to regear. Another option would be the 285/60-18 Terra Grappler which is basically a 32x11.50 tire.
