Another rim/tire thread

Hello everyone, I am looking at a bunch of different tires right now and have a few questions.

I have a 2005 STX Flareside regular cab.

I am looking at upgrading tires from the stock Generals. I am looking at Cooper Discoverers, either STTs, or STs. I am leaning toward the STTs but any real world experience-backed opinions are welcomed.

My second issue is that I am looking to go up in size, but I would rather not need new rims. I am going to keep the stock 17s for now. I am looking at 285/70/17s but I need to know, is this too wide for my rims? Also, will this even fit on my truck with stock suspension(no lift)? I will be installing a set of rancho lift struts up front in the upcoming months, but I will be getting tires first so a little rubbing is okay, but the less the better off I'll be.

Does anyone have a truck with this setup on it? If not, does anyone know if this will work prior to the struts?

You left out an important piece of info. 4x4 or 4x2? If you have a 4x4, those will fit easily with room to spare. If you have a 4x2, you will probably have minor rubbing unless you level the truck. Also, that size is fine for the OEM 7.5 inch wide wheels.

Sorry, it is a 4x4. Is that the biggest I can go on a stock 17" rim without rubbing? You say room to spare, are we talking 305/70/17s with minimal rubbing or ?

It's been posted hundreds of times. You can fit a 35x12.50-17 (315/70-17) by using the OEM wheels and a leveling kit but they may rub the control arms at full steering lock. Anything smaller will fit without rubbing.

I'm sorry, I didn't find that. I wasn't even sure you could go that big on stock rims.
