MPH diff with larger tires (results, not question)

I had the speedometer calibration in my truck checked last week in an attempt to get my wife out of a speeding ticket. Since I installed larger tires, I expected the speedo to be off. Boy was I wrong.

The truck is a 98 F150 ORP with the 17" wheels and 32" tires stock. I replaced them with Pro Comp AT 33x12.50 tires on stock wheels.

When it was all said and done, there was a 1MPH difference at 65 MPH (that's as high as they test) and it was dead on accurate below that.

Good to know I don't have to worry about it, bad because now I have to scramble to find another way to fight this ticket. Argh.

Not to sound like an a$$hole, why not just fess up and pay the ticket? Unless it was written for soemthing really dumb. However, i have also noticed, since i swithced from 255/70/16's to 265/75/16 that there is not much difference in the speedo.

I'm sick and tired of cops pulling people for speeding "because it's dangerous" when it's just a front to gather more money for the county. When they put it in the budget and depend on it, then something is wrong.

Why don't they pull over the morons driving around with flat tires, mufflers falling off, drunks, moms in SUV's on cel phones, etc? Because there's no money in it.

They already take 1/3 of my income for taxes, and I'm sick and tired of letting the US government have my money without a fight.

If you don't fight for your freedom, they will take it away. Too many people are too complacent. Stand up for what you believe in for Gods sake, this country has turned into a bunch of wusses.

It's good that you care about fighting for your rights, now, how about do something smart and help others. Devote your misguided anger towards a more pressing issue like illiteracy, or world hunger. You seem to think you will make a difference, why not fight for something worthwhile instead of whining about cops DOING THEIR ****** JOBS! My god.. Chill out, there are worse evil's out there then cops. Don't get me wrong, I tell every cop I know (and I know a lot since I work with them)that they write too many tickets and they need to go after bigger fish, but really, you are not going to make a difference, pay the ticket, slow down, and get on with your life

Red face

I personally don't have that big of a problem with cops wrting tickets. A few days ago I got one for going 50 in a 35. The problem I have is when cops fly by me like they have somewhere to go. Two days after I got that ticket a cop on the interstate about ran me over he was going so fast. I figured he had somewhere to go- NOT! I followed him off the interstate because he was going the way I was and I had trouble keeping up with him going 55 on that SAME STREET I got a ticket on. I doubt a cop is speeding for 10 miles on the interstate then flying through town because he is doing cop stuff. Personally this PISSES ME OFF when cps think they can speed but throw a ticket at me for doing it. BULLSH*T!!!! Ok, I'm done....

Amen, jayntguru.

While we're on the subject...You know what really chaps my a$$? Cops sitting on the side of a busy highway or thoroughfare with a radar or laser gun doing absolutely nothing but generating revenue for an idiot mayor (always running a deficit despite the most prolific economy we've ever had). Then I see cops do nothing when four or five cars run through a red light just because it is too inconvenient to stop. Or how about this one, malfunctioning lights at a overwhelmingly busy intersection and no cops anywhere to be found to help direct traffic... I'll jump off now.

I got a ticket once for a wide turn. That's right, a wide turn. Everytime I see a cop out on the road they make wide turns. I don't care so much if they do, but don't give me a ticket for it, and then go do it yourself. And another thing, I admit I usually speed, but when I do, I am always in control of my truck. Last week I saw a chick driving the wrong way on a one way street, talking on her phone. What's more dangerous, ME (being in control of my truck at 55 mph), or HER (endangering everybody on the road)? If you are in control of your vehicle, what is the difference between 45 and 55?

I don't really care about world hunger or illiteracy. Education is free in the US, and MCDonalds is always hiring. Enuff said.

I'm more into the "get off your own butt and help yourself" mentality.

If cops were doing their jobs, someone wouldn't have t-boned my wife's car, running a redlight 15 seconds after it turned red, never hitting the brakes or swerving. She was almost killed.

If cops did their jobs, I wouldn't have a relative who was raped and beaten to death. Some pansy judge let a multiple conviction child molester, rapist out easy. Now she's dead.

If cops were doing their jobs, they would be concentrating on the real dangerous drivers, and not on the revenue creating drivers out there.

Anyway, cops are a majpr pet peeve of mine. All of them aren't bad, granted, just most of them. Cops are what the dumb bulleys in high school do for a living.

Ok, explain to me how cops doing their jobs would have prevented that accident, or how they would have prevented your relative from being raped and killed? You want one on every street corner, in every alley, posted every 20 ft along every rd in the US? ok, maybe out of you taxes, it's just not feasable. While it is sad that the accident happend, I am glad your wife is ok, and it is very tragic you lost someone in your family. but these are things that are just unavoidable, we can only afford to have so many out there.. and part of their salary comes from those tickets.. you want more cops? Pay you damn ticket...

Sprhck, no it's not feasible to have a cop every 20 feet, but if they started wring tickets for all the idiots running red lights/stop signs then these kinds of behaviors would decrease significantly. I get really mad when I see cops sitting at intersections who completely ignore blatant violations, inasmuch as it's almost become acceptable to run red lights. Here in Houston they had to reprogram all the lights, allowing for several second delays between changes in different directions...this is the wrong approach and actually condones red light runners not to mention the delays it causes for all drivers.

I also agree that speeding has become somewhat of a problem. Don't misunderstand, I love to drive fast, but there is a time and place, i.e. open interstates and the like (when traffic is lighter). Again it pisses me off when I see dolts racing through residential neighborhoods, just because there is no need for this kind of behavior. I've also seen many instances of people driving over 100 mph on city highways. This too is unnecessary and endangers the lives of all the surrounding innocent drivers. Bottom line is good judgement should prevail and people need to drive with purpose rather than simply getting in their vehicles and becoming completely oblivious to the surroundings.

i had my 99 Lariat tested and when I was doing70 on the spedo I was really doing 78... and at 30 I was doing 35...and everything in between varied.
I had 265/70's and went to a 2" lift and BFG's that were 295/75's

I agree with jimmsimm and Jaynt. It's running red lights and driving reckless that kills innocent people, yet I only see the police pull people over for going a little over the speed limit, which is usually harmless.
I got a ticket for going 52mph in a 50mph zone. The policeman was rude and said I was in a 45 zone (even though the big sign read 50). I went to court and spent several hours there. The judge said I should never have gotten the ticket because the radar could be off by 1-2 mph and the cop should have known that the speed limit was 50mph.
How can they use radar when they are driving towards you anyway?
