Question of stock wheels vs. wide tires

Question of stock wheels vs. wide tires
So I've been running on Pirelli Scorpion Zeros for about 3K now. I really like them, nice stance and great performance at higher speeds. However, I've had to balance them twice ( besides the install balance..). Discount
Tire says that's because these are 285/65/16's on stock 7" wide rims. Would it really help to get 8" wide aftermarket wheels?

no...they are full of crap. Some tires are just plain hard to balance. I had 285/75R16s on my stock rims for a year and balanced them the day the put them on and that was it. Sometimes your alignment can throw your balance off or you could throw the weights too i guess. I dunno...all i know is that i know many ppl with that tire setup and thats not ur problem...hope this helps...

I know for a fact it will not help that much. Why because I did it. I have 285 BFG At's on 16X8 American Baja rims and I still think that Tire discounters can not balance worth a s*@%. I am almost 90% sure I slung a wheel weight within 15 miles of leaving there. I still have a slight side to side motion in the wheel. Not a tremble, just a steady rock back and forth that only seems to be noticed at 50mph or greater. I have come to and been told several things so far.
1. Tires are not balanced right.
2. Given the type of tire ( IE: large off-road) the tire is tall and sort of soft so the tire or tread wants walk or give more with the road. If this is the case I have been told once I hit abot 3k they should settle down some.
3. I have something worn out. Probably ball joints. The bigger tires just seem to magnify any problems you had to start with and help in making that and other things wear faster.
If you ask me I think it's a slight combination of all 3, leaning more towards that they did not align and balance well. I am even debating on dropping a size to help solve that and the annoying up and downshift of the tranny while on the interstate. What do you think? Think I should?

KyFordfreak: I didn't see your sig. so I don't know if you have a Superchip...If not, get one before you buy tires to help the up/down shifting of your auto trans. Not only will this help solve this problem but you'll get a little more power to boot. Thanks for our insite into the balancing problems.

Your welcome on the insite and thank you for the superchip tip and no I don't have one. I actually posted a question asking if a superchip would help with the up/down shift in my thread called "Pics of my new tires and wheels" as I have already bought mine. I need to get back up to about 2200 RPM's at 75 MPH to keep the trans in OD. Right now I am running at about 2000 at 75mph. To be exact I need a 184RPM increase at the least. Do you think a superchip would really help in my situation?
Here's my sig this time!

KYfordfreak: Yeh, I think a Superchip would help. At first I thought you were just wanting to settle down the shifting, the standard chip does that well. If you want the to run specific RPMs at a certain speed I think that can be done but I'm not sure if the standard chip for your ECU will do what you need. I know MIKE TROYER could answer this. He hangs at the "CHIP" section of the postings and is pretty prompt at answering stuff. He posts his phone # also for expanded questions about what the chip can or can't do. But, for sure,
you'll love the chip anyway. Have your digits ready that are located on the top of your ECU (passenger side firewall- box with big 3" plug screwed into it). example "SVB1"
good luck, let us know.
