I can answer that for you. My dad owns a tire store and I work for him so I've heard a lot about why tire prices have gone up so much. In the last year alone, I believe, tire prices have gone up roughly 30%. That is mainly due to the increasing cost of natural rubber. Tires today are a mix of natural and synthetic rubbers. Even though they are not 100% natural rubber, when the cost of that natural rubber goes up so will tires and other things made of it. It also has a little bit to do with gas prices. It costs tire companies more to move them so they have to raise their prices so that they can still keep close to their same margin of profit.

Yeah, it's crazy how everything kind of ties in together. You found a set of 305/70 17 terra grapplers for 229 each?

i ordered mine right before the japan earthquake. don't know if they were pulling my leg but 4wp said they were having trouble getting them because of that. might be a reason for the price jump as well.

Synthetic rubber has gone up because of the price of oil. Synthetic rubber is made from 2 different by products of oil. Oil goes up, rubber goes up.

285/75/17 is an alternative. It's a little thinner of a tire, but overall nearly same diameter as the 305/70/17. They are right at 200 per tire including shipping.
