Another "phantom" ABS engagement issue - with a twist?

OK, I had originally brought another thread back from the dead, but it's not really the problem I'm having, and I have a few more ideas, so I thought I'd start a fresh topic instead.

My truck ('99 4WD) recently began "ABS-ing" occasionally when slowing down to stop, usually under 5-10 MPH. It occurs only once in a while, and is not repeatable. Turning or making straight-line stops does not seem to make a difference.

I'm planning to pull the ABS fuse for now because sometimes, that extra 6-10 feet DOES make a difference!

I've read that the first thing to look at is usually the RABS sensor, then the fronts, and to check the hub tightness, etc.

BUT - I also saw where one person mentioned bad rear diff fluid, where the poster mentioned "wheel-skipping" problems, and other issues with the diff, which got me to thinking...

My rear end has more lateral play in it than I'd like (nearly 1/8", it feels like), and often makes a clunk when turning across uneven surfaces when the back end "shakes" from side to side.

This has me wondering if the clunk/free-play and the ABS issue could be related. They did not start at the same time, but still...

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

Clearing out old subscriptions, and getting ready to do tings to a sonne-to-be-new-to-me '03, and came across this post.

I thought I'd update to let any future searchers know that this was resolved with replacement of the front hubs. After a few years of running no ABS fuse, a wheel bearing started making noise. Replaced the hubs, re-installed the ABS fuse, and all was good.
