Is that right? He's just messing with you. 35x12.5 with minor rubbing. Anything smaller should fit without issue. What gears do you have? I have 3.55s so I won't go bigger than 295/70/17 without regearing as I tow a travel trailer.

Most of it depends on the type tire, wheel width and backspacing. A 35" AT tire on a 8" wide wheel with 5.5 inches of BS is less likely to rub then a 35" mud tire on a 9" with 4.5 or 5 inches of BS. These would be on a 2 1/2" leveled 4x4. Believe me I've found out the hard way!

Addressing the back will have no effect on the issue of rubbing. That's solely a front wheel issue. Spacers would hurt as it would cause rubbing on the back of the wheel well even more. That's why PawPaw said a 5.5" backspace is better than a 4.5 so I wouldn't do a spacer.
As far as 3" level, I've heard of front drive shaft binding as the wheel moves through it's stroke. There are guys here that say they have gone that route without issues, but I think the majority say 2.5" is max. I've talked directly to the guys at Icon and although you can adjust their coilover up to 3" - they rec 2.5" max for the reasons I've mentioned.

because every driver is different. the more you weigh the less room your tires have. I only weigh 160lbs but when I drive I only rub on the left side where I sit. its just enough to make contact
