Wagner brake pads, what does the "a" mean?

I'm looking at purchasing a set of Wagner pads (front/rear) and wanted to know what the "a" meant after the part #'s?
Example the rear pads are part number "mx1012" but there's also a "mx1012a"?
Anyone know what the difference is?

Also what's the consensus here, ceramic or semi metalic?

Seems like its half and half. I like the idea of ceramics but also like that the semi metalics are easier on the rotors.

Thanks in advance!

I went Centric ceramics, low dust and quiet. After doing some research they seem to be one of the best bang for the $$ on ceramic pads. Not sure which is harder on rotors (I've heard arguments each way), but since my rotors are close to the mins they will be getting replaced next brake job regardless.
