Airing Down Tires?

Just sitting around thinking of stuff and got to wondering, under what conditions to guys air their tires down...I'm talkin way down?? I don't know if we have any hard core off-roaders here like you would on a Jeep forum or something, but what scenarios would you do this? I know guys run like 5-10psi in tires when rock climbing and stuff, but are there others, like say soft sand, snow, mud, etc. When is beneficial. Or is the opposite ever true when a full inflated tire may be of more use off road?

By no means am I any expert on this, but I would think to air down a conventional tire to those levels would ruin the sidewalls. I believe you would have to have some beefy tires to be safe with those pressures and terrain. Just my thoughts. I am thinking it really depends on the brand and construction of the tires involved.

you really have to air down when driving in soft sand. i drove up here in the sand dunes my first time and didnt air down and my truck was bogging and would hardly make it up hills. but when i aired down, it drove alot better! i air down to about 10psi

Basically people air down for rockcrawling and deep sand.

Airing down for sand is a must. If you ever get a chance to play in a sandy area it's pretty easy to feel the difference. I've been in situations where we forgot to air down when we started out, got to a spot where we got stuck/hung up, then aired down and made it out. Throttle plays a big role in sand too.
