Unhappy crusty 17's

this truck has been cleaned and maintained like most of the fanatics would on this site. i've always carefully cleaned and polished my factory 17's, but to my discouragement they are getting really nasty. the clear coat is blistering and the wheels are oxidizing underneath. what gives? are they just prone to this? am i doing something wrong? are they covered under the factory corrosion warantee?

you guys ae killing me!! no one else on this sight has this problem? i must live in the only part of the world where aluminum wheels decompose

any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, but if you don't have any i guess i'll have to start hunting for the few of us that have this problem.

About two months ago I had that problem on my 00 Camry, the dealer replaced them no charge.

Try taking to the dealer, it's worth a try.

Are all of your wheels turning nasty??? I've heard of the one right rear wheel getting bad on the '97's with the exhaust in front of the wheel, but not on any other models.

Which rims do you have? I have factory aluminum (6 spoke) rims on my 98 and they are flawless.

Is it the wheel itself and the centre cap that is oxidizing, or just one of those? Are you using really harsh chemicals when cleaning the wheels? Do you ever wax your wheels?

I'm not sure if they'd cover that under warranty. Since that sort of thing was common with the '97 wheels, you just might be able to get replacements!

i have the factory 17" alloys(as far as i know there is only one type). only the wheels are oxidizing. i never use chemicals to clean them and they get waxed regularly. being as old as they are, i don't know if ford would replace them.

I have the same problem on my '97 F150 4x4. Only in the area of balance weights though.

I haven't got a major problem on mine. There is 2 little spots on one of the wheels that is starting, the previous owner must've chipped them somehow. But, I'll just paint them up with some clear nailpolish and that should seal them, I hope.
