I've got a 2000 F150 4wd super cab with 255 /70/16 wranglers on it. My question is does the 255 stand for the wheel tread width, or the over all height of the tire??
The 255 is the tread width in millimeters. The 70 is the aspect ratio - the height of the sidewall of the tire is 70% of the tread width measurement - hence lower numbers 60, 50 etc result in a lower profile tire. Of course, the 16 is the rim size in inches.
Just to add to what director said, since the width is used in the aspect ratio (75 or 70 or 60), a wider width tire will also make the tire taller too.
