I replaced the disk pads in my 97 this fall, at about 75,000 miles. Piece of cake to replace - about 15 mins per wheel.
Make sure you get a quality set of pads or you will get lots of crappy-looking brake dust on your wheels. I ordered some "Titanium" pads from JC Whitney and they seemed to work just fine; little dust.
If I were you, I would replace them soon. There is no real benchmark for how long they last as people's driving habits affect longevity. However, when you replace them, make sure you address any rotor issues, too. I would have them turned or replaced.
