Question 18" vs. 20" - Opinions Needed.....

I presently have stock 16" wheels/tires and am looking for some new wheels. I want a larger wheel but can't decide on 18"s or 20"s. I plan to keep the same outer tire diameter as I have now.

Is there any substantial decrease in ride quality with the larger wheels and lower profile tires? If so, does it get worse as tire size decreases?

What is the maximum width wheel that will fit (stock ride height) with no problems?

Thanks!

In response to your 18 or 20 inch wheels, I just got 18 inch wheels on a 99 expedition yesterday and let me tell you, it makes everything look different, just because its not that nasty stock. As far as which to go with if you have a 16 inch factory riim, Id go with 18. Because you are plus sizing of 2 inches. It will look good. It also depends on you, I had to go with 18s because my dad saids 20's are ugly and "ghetto" to be politiacally incorect. But I and him are very happy with 18's. There cheapers and they work fine and add a great deal of style depending on which ones you get, I could get you some pics.
My tire size is 265/60/18 falken stz-01(unbeliveable tire) my dad loves them and say's the car isnt as top heavy any more because its much grippier. They have an awsome tread patern and overall look great.

IF you're gonna go, go BIG

Ghetto- I don't know about that...

There are PLENTY of white collared, white-haired (Not to mention white men) who are execs here in Plano, TX who can afford FAR nicer vehicles, driving around in Escalades, Navigators and Expeditions- sitting on 20, 22 7 24 inch rims...

And believe me, Plano is a long way from the Ghetto. Look in the windows, and I guarantee you the person rolling that Escalade sitting on chromed-out 22's is far from Ghetto.

Anyhoo- I have 20's and my ride did not diminish in any capacity- I think it rides better. Why spend $1800 on a set of 18's when you can put $400 with it, and have 20's?

I don't like the term "Ghetto" used to describe the way a car or truck looks, but, if one must be described as ghetto, then be Ghetto Fabulous!

RobDude30,

I agree BigHersh that as nice as 18's are why not go for the 20's ? To say something is 'ghetto' is all relative to what you want, its all how you present your ride. I am currently upgrading my Screw's 17'' wheels to the Harley 20's. I thought about the 18'' Lightning wheels but Harley 20's are just plain sweet ! Just my .02 cents guys.... gotta do what you want, after all you're the one who's driving it

BigHersh, the Expy with those 20's looks schweet !! What do you use to keep that black paint looking like a mirror ??

Thanks!

The wax I use is called Finish 2001.

Thay say you only need to apply it once a year, or 52 washes- I usually do it twice a year, but it's only gotten the treatment once this year (2002) It's a 2000 that turns two (for me) on Oct. 29, 2002.

Yep, those are 20's on the Expy & the S'Crew.

A/R Vanguards on the Expy
Centerline Avenger's on the S'Crew.

Robdude,

I peeked into your gallery and 18's or 20's would look awesome on your Screw, 20's especially. You would loose a little smoothness of ride with a 20" wheel and 295/40/20 tires but it would be minimal. You would gain a little bit of road feel and grip, depending on the tire you choose. You could go to a 305/45/20 and not loose any smoothness of ride but the tire size would make the wheels look like 17's again. Did that make sense??

The max width wheel I would recommend is 10 inches since 295/40/20's and 305/45/20's are designed for 8.5 to 10" wide wheels.

I would more than happy to help.

Tim

PS- RobDude

I have a SuperCrew rolling on Dubs! 20" wheels....
They are wrapped in 275/55/20's and they are as smooth as the 16's were.

I expected a rougher ride, and I am surprised (Pleasantly) that it wasn't.

Because my tires are think, I get asked "Are those 20's?" I say yes, go read the sidewall. I didn't like the low-low profile 45/40 tires on an SUV, w/o lowering it.... My goal was to fill up the wheel well, and have 20's.

Mission Accomplished. Click my link below, you'll see my SuperCrew too.
