Tire advice

Hi,

I 'd like some advice if you don't mind. I have a 1999 F150 4x4 Supercab. I have the original Goodyears on them.

The Goodyears have about 50K miles on them and I've found that they have little cracks on the sides. The treads looks like they're still good. My questions are:

1. Should I look into replacing them? I'm looking at the Michelin LTX that many are recommending here.

2. Should I worry about the cracks on the sides? Am I ok for now?

3. Anyone know what causes the cracks?

I just use the truck in normal city and highway driving.

Thanks,

shadow

not shure, but in my case with cracking, I think I pushed them too hard around some corners, LOL

I got new tires after 22k miles, but thats cuz of the new wheels. I know many people that go a long distance on worn out tires, I feel as though its best to replace them early, just for safety concerns.

I'm in the same boat, shadow...
I've got a 98 w/ 57K miles on the original goodyears. cracking on sidewalls and a little on the tread. I have "some" tread left = 5/32nds.

I think the cracking is from the tires drying out from tire dressing.
I don't think its something to worry about for now as long as the tread is ok...caveat that w/ how aggressive you drive. Peace of mind is a great thing.

I'm personally looking into Dunlop Radial Rover ATs to replace my tires. I had a set of RVs a few years back and they were great. They're much cheaper than Michelins (although I've heard great things about them), and have a similar mileage warranty. I just can't justify spending 2x as much for a tire. Yes, I know, "a lot is riding on your tires."

Cheers,
Paul

I did a good deal of shopping for tires as my 99 needed the horrid RT/S replaced as well. I was leaning towards the Bridgestone Dueler AT REVOs, but instead went for a BigO brand Bigfoot ATs. I am in agreement that it would take alot to justify spending the extra money that some tires cost. Eventhough the BFG TAs are great tires are they worth $40 more per tire.....? Not in my book

Thanks all for your comments. I'm going to weather these tires for awhile and see what happens. This will give me a chance to save for the new tires.

Yeah,

Those stock Good4oneYear tires suck *****!!
I have 10,000 miles on em, and will be replacing them just as soon as I come up with the cash.

They are ok on dry pavement, but as soon as a raindrop hits the ground, "fogetaboutit"

I can't wait to chuck em in the garbage, pos tries.

I was looking into getting the Michelin LTX, but I got BFG Radial TAs, and I havent regretted it. They look great, and give nice traction.

Tire cracks

Sidewall cracks are mostly caused by ultraviolet rays (Sun light) some can be caused by drying out in storage (spare tire) Small cracks are generally not dangerous but keep in mind sidewalls are the section of tires that dissipate the greatest heat, you may not want to travel too fast. Sidewalls are also the section that take the most stress on sharp turns. I would not concern myself with small cracks as long as they are not all the way into the carcass, exposing tire cord.
