Tools needed: Fuel Line Disconnect Tool After leaving the truck sit over night, I relieved the pressure in the fuel line using the schrader valve (tire valve) which is located on the top of the fuel rail on the passenger side of the engine on my 4.6L. I was prepared for some fuel leakage with a rag wrapped at the base of the valve. I removed the plastic cap and used a small nail to push the valve in. There was only a small release of pressure, I suspect because the truck had sat overnight. With the pressure released I replaced the cap on the valve. As a precaution I than removed the fuel pump fuse, (position number 19) in the "Power Distribution Box" which is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment behind the air filter housing. Next, locate the fuel filter which can be found inside the frame rail on the drivers side approximately 4 to 5 feet back from the rear of the front tire. It's a silver metal canister approximately 2 and ¾ inches in length. To remove the lines you take the fuel line disconnect tool and place it on the fuel filter where the fuel line connects. Push the tool so it slides inside the fuel line releasing the internal clips that lock it onto the filter. Once the tool is inserted completely inside you should be able to pull the line off the end of the filter. Repeat this for the other end. Once the lines are removed cap off the ends of the filter to minimize fuel from spilling out while removing it from the bracket. To remove the filter from the bracket I found it best to hold onto the ends of the filter while pushing the filter up and rolling the bottom of the filter out of the bracket. Once the old filter is removed install the new filter into the bracket making sure the flow direction is correct. With the filter installed push the fuel lines on the appropriate ends until you hear a click. That will be the clips inside the line locking onto the filter. With your lines connected replace the fuel pump fuse. Put your key in the ignition and turn it to the on position and check to make sure there are no leaks. |
